Re: HERRICK'S RECIPE FOR A SPACE-WOUND SECONDARY

Three additional comments:

1. In mounting the upright dowels on my 2x4 base, it would have been
simpler, of course, to have merely pinned the dowels in place after
drilling their transverse 1/2" holes and aligning those holes with their
axes parallel to the 2x4. The "far" pin would have been removable so
that the far Sonotube support could be lifted off for mounting/unmounting
the tube.

2. I found that a Sonotube rotation rate of 13-14 rpm was all I could
manage--leading, for a 12 1/2" diameter, to around 9"/second of twine or
wire rate of travel.

3. In winding a close-wound coil, one would dispense with the twine &
just wind the wire directly onto the sticky-tape. As for the tape
itself, I'd think ordinary "carpet tape" would be perfectly OK. The
adhesive would keep the wire turns nice & tight until final varnishing;
little if any resiliency would be needed.
