You can also use what is known as a "Christmas Tree" bit. It is a stepped
bit for cutting holes. They run about $20-30.
Bimetal hole saws are the way for bigger holes (3-4" and up, but really
anything >3/4"). The mandrel will set you back about $15, but the saws are
fairly inexpensive. If you are drilling/cutting steel (like a Hoffman box),
go with slow drill speeds, use lube, and don't buy the cheap blades. If the
blade stops cutting, and starts to rub (as the teeth get dull), the metal
hardens, and you'll never cut it. YOu probably only need one size of the
hole saw, if you buy your meters all in the same size.
Another big circle device is a circle cutter, which looks like a beam
compass with a 1/4" pilot bit in the center, and a single cutting edge on an
adjustable radius beam. A drill press helps a lot, although a BIG handheld
drill will work(so it's massive and steady, not because it needs the
torque).
Finally, the slowest, but cheapest way to cut big holes is to drill lots of
little holes around the edge, and then get out the half round file and go to
work. This will build lots of moral fiber, especially on a thick steel
panel.
