Deano,

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but if it's not a spurious
reflection from the gap then I'd guess you're seeing a combination of
autotransformer action between the tap point and the outermost turns of
the primary combined with insufficient clearance between the outermost
turn and your rotary spark gap. 

Try increasing the distance between the gap and the outermost turn of
the primary.
