I'm pretty sure that using an air-blast gap sort of fixes these problems.  
Sure, an RSG is best, but by using air blasts, one can shrink the gap to 
avoid losses while still having it fire at higher voltages.  Makes sense for 
those who don't have the time/energy/money/knowledge to create an RSG.
