The oil is real important if you float about 3/4" on top then this
should 
stop any corona that may form.
Also try and get the level of water equal inside and out.

Now Jim has hit the nail on the head, cos you can not beat beer caps
they are great fun in the parts finding dept, and they take lots of
abuse.
