You can use pvc insulated wire.  If you do this, it would be best to go to
a slightly larger diameter and perhaps slightly longer coilform.  I'm not
sure what power level you are running, but pvc insulated type windings are
usually used above 4 kva power levels.  If running with a NST (neon sign
transformer) then high temperature (200 degree C) insulated magnet wire
works excellent.  A height to dia ratio of 4.5:1 seems to work very good
with magnet wire designs.

John's book has a lot of charts and graphs that will prove useful to a good
design.
