Well..... I have read Sloan's article. It was a CW machine and ran 
considerably below 1 GHz as I recall. I know the resonator was a 
helix inside a tank (with gases? can't quite remember - must have 
been). Is this the design to which you're referring? I must admit I 
did take the 1GHz mentioned by the original poster at face value.
