Mot Weirdness, and other bizzare things

This is to be more of an information dump, than a query. I finally managed
to get around to my storage shed to retreive the MOT from a wounded
microwave
I had there.

After the needed dissection, I hooked the MOT up to find out just how the
beastie would work as a limiter for my pig. Alas, I do not have a current
meter capable of 10A+, so I was just checking to see how hot things got.
Unscientific, perhaps, but it works.

I plugged the MOT into my 10A variac, and slowly wound up the voltage. At
about 90V the MOT began a menacing growl. Coils were slightly warm to the
touch.

Then I shorted the secondary. The 10A fuse in my variac went *poof*. So
shorting was out, for now. Wired the MOT in series with my pig, open
secondary, and hit the switch. I was not expecting the kind out power arcs
flying out of the system. The MOT seemed to be passing close to 1KVA as
measured
by comparing the power arcs with those produced by using shorted neons as
ballast. Windings were hot after 2 minute run.
I disconnected the coil, and just had my gap across the pig. At this
point, I could barely get a peep out of the gap. So I shorted the secondary
and tried. This fired up the gap ok.. but popped my 15A circut breaker.
So, I tried it feeding the tank again, open secondaries, just in case I had
something screwy hooked up. Same results. Tons of current passing. I'll
borrow
a clamp on current meter from work, and try and get you better figures.

The other thing comes under the heading of "fun but weird", I had gone back
to one of my smaller ballasts (15KV30ma NST, shorted secondary) and was
mapping
fields with a 4' flourescent. I was doing this in the dark ( I feel safe as
I have my coil wired with a deadman, I did not have to find the power
switch,
and my pig is located back in a protected corner, I use stripped 150KV Xray
cable to hook it up.) Anyway, I turned the coil off, and was moving back to
the
garage light switch when the fl. tube flashed in my hand. Moving it around
I manged to get a good 15-20 flashes.. sometimes 2-4 in the same spot, the
rest
scattered in a radius around where I was standing. I figure I was either
collecting
and discharing ions in the air, or removing the charge form items that had
picked
up one from the coil, or some combo of the above. But was kinda fun,
watching the
tube flash every few seconds...

enough rambling for now.
