The only thing to keep in mind on a polygonal 
cross section is that the vertices may produce
corona, and possibly damaging arcs, if they are
too sharp.  Otherwise the operation is the same
as a cylinder.  My 43" x 126" coilform for the 
40kW coil( http://www.lod-dot-org/teslacoils.html )
is wound on a 12-sided polygon, and works fine.
