Sheets of paper make good feeler gages, and cheap too. Stack up a 100
sheets, measure the total thickness, etc.

Or, for a real easy solution for under $5, hie thee on down to an auto
parts store and buy a set of feeler gages. Thin strips of metal from
.001 inch on up.
