Maybe there is more than one way to skin a cat so to speak.  Perhaps we 
are overlooking some subtle piece of the transformer or surrounding 
circuitry?  The only microwave transformer I have ever had came from my 
1000W Magic Chef, and it was obviously shunted, with the same type of 
small "core chunks" you see in neon sign transformers.
