I built a flat spiral primary and driver secondary for a small 
magnifier about 3 years ago.  Powering xfmr was a 15kV, 30mA NST,
0.003uf, Tesla equidrive with 6 section fixed air blast static 
gap.  The unique thing about this geometry was the coupling was
3 dimensionally linear with spacing and number of active turns.
That is, the coupling was linear with vertical spacing between
primary and secondary, and linear with active primary turns (tune point)
and secondary.  Couplings up to 0.6 was achieved, however, flashovers
through 1/4" switchgear grade fiberglas between primary and secondary
nuked (no pun intended) further development.  BTW, discharges from
resonator of about 15-18" were achieved.  This assembly was shown at
one of the TCBOR meetings, and was on one of the tapes.

The coupling behavior helped explain why pancake coupling coils
were king in early radio, coupling could be extrapoliated by 
spacing and active turns.  Also, there was significant capacitive
coupling between the driver windings, however assembly is no longer
available so reassembly and measurements are not possible.
