        The "Handbook of Chemistry & Physics"  (Chemical Publishing Co.)
        has a table of spark-gap distances in air at STP for needle
        point gaps, and gaps using spherical electrodes of various
        diameters.  At least the older editions do -- not sure about
        the more recent ones.   Note that the relationship of voltage
        vs. distance is non-linear with voltage.

        This standard reference work is certain to be found in any
        technical library and in a great many public libraries.

                                 Spark gaps/knowlege gaps - neither
                                 should be too great,
