Hey Bob,
My first coil used a 3.5" brass ball, (an old bedknob I think) and glass
and
alum.foil caps and a 12K 30ma neon (and a single gap). At first it was
wispy almost colorless multiple sparks, maybe a foot long. But as I
added
more caps, and tuned it, I saw it go to a fairly straight 15" spark that
would dance about at the very top of the sphere. The coil was tall, and
my
ceiling low (about 3' from torroid to timbers) And at the time I just
thot
it was how it was s'pose ta look. Thinkin' back now, maybe it was just
attracted to the nearest ground (the ceiling) and maybe that was why it
stayed at the top. I like big lightning-like sparks, but kinda miss the
solid "very purple" snakelike, single sparks I made, when I didn't have
any
idea what I was doin' ;o) ...OK, make that- when I first started
playin'
with 'em. My bet is that usin' all the same components, and fiddlin'
with
tune, you will see the "straight" sparks again. :o)

happy "at will" coilin!
