Sorry, I was thinking that a TC generating continous spark to earthed target would 
be loaded such that it is not operating in 'normal' mode.

Just like that crystal oscilator circuit I was trying to make work the other day.
It would only work when the scope probe was attached.  The method of measurement
affects the outcome.

I do like the idea of 10 strikes per minute to earthed probe as this allows the 
coil to operate in the way we all intend and provides a meaningfull measurement.
