Lynn,

You've found an indoor 2:1 step-down transformer. These are typically
used in distributing power in office buidings. If you drove it from a
240 VAC source, you'd only get 480 volts out. When hunting for rocks and
minerals, I'd often run into "leaverite" - a very large, heavy, and not
particularly attractive specimen of unknown type. With large rocks, and
large transformers, sometimes the best bet is to "leaver 'er right"
there!
