Chip:
I have used one of the .025mfd. -at- 20,000 VAC Condenser Product caps
with no problem on my 8" dia secondary coil. I use a Superior type
1256D variable transformer on the input side of my 14,400 VAC 10KW pole
pig. Since we have high line voltage and the Superior variable is wired
for the voltage boost selection, I get 300 VAC output from it resulting
in around 18,000 VAC out of the pig. The cap ran from July to October
and didn't blow with regular trips to the maximum output levels. The
above voltage is under steady state conditions and obviously does not
include any variations caused by the inductive kick generated by the
current limiting welder. My new cap will be ordered with a 30,000 VAC
rating, if I can justify the expense(read that, if his wife lets
him!!). I really think, now looking back at this situation that maybe I
was very, very lucky I didn't pop the cap. I'll do the same thing again
though when it warms up and I start firing the coil again. As was
mentioned by others, I do miss the smell of ozone!
