Hi Steve,

Maybe a design similar to a neon or arc welder shunt could be used to complete
the magnetic circuit.  Perhaps something "U" shaped that would line up with the
ends of your welding rods when they are completely inserted in your coil.  You
could either swing it away, or move your rods partially out to create a gap in
the circuit.  I suppose you'd need some type of lock or clamp either way.  

Hopefully the "artwork" below will stay intact.
