Although the base current is relatively high, its nowhere near the peaks
slamming through the the primary circuit (which mandates good, tight
connections!). All of the above approaches DO work (at least for a
while).  However, if the connection is not "gas tight", corrosion over
time will potentially degrade it, and undesirable arcing. If you want
more long-term assurance, a heavy-dut soldered-on lug and mating
connector (1/4" or larger Fast-ON, or similar) can be used. Just watch
that the added HW doesn't create another source for corona/breakdown to
upper parts of the coil if you're pushing the envelope on coupling...
