Ed,

You should put the spark gap in parallel with the cap.  That is correct. 
 This is real tough on capacitors and transformers, but is the ultimate 
test.  If the spark is hot and noisey, you are probably OK in the cap 
department.  Look elsewhere if this test is passed.
