gaskets (at least the non-metallic kind) should work fine,
I would think.  You want to apply a lot of pressure to the
area where the gaskets are, and that should give a good seal.
I'm looking into the matter right now as I want to renovate
my old AMRAD gap, which has too low a voltage because the
3/64" fiber gaskets have compressed sometime in the last 75
years.
