I use Animal grade Mineral oil, a laxative for farm animals. I got it 
at our local farm CO-OP. It was cheap for mineral oil, $25 US for
five US gallons.

Yes thats correct.

Each stack of 21 metal sheets, measures out to 1 7/8". Throw in
the four compressed particle boards, used as spacers and compression
aids, and its overall thickness is about 8".

I rounded the corners with a silver dollar and metal shears. And then
used a file and sand paper to smooth the edges. I then washed the
plates in hot soapy water and coated all of them in mineral oil
before stacking them.
